Halloween Tips for Dogs

A Lancashire Heelers wears a spider costume featuring four big eyes on top of her head and eight orange and black hairy legs. She stares straight into the camera licking her lips.

Halloween is supposed to be a scary time, but let’s make sure it is a safe kind of scary. Be sure your dog is wearing their ID collar or tracker this season.

Dogs can give a variety of amusing reactions upon seeing someone in costume. Be sure to let your dog know it’s you behind the scary getup. It’s a good idea to desensitize your dog to the doorbells and knocks that come with trick-or-treaters.

If you want to take your dog trick-or-treating, many pet stores, dog parks, and doggy facilities hold trick-or-treat events for dogs. Check your local pet store or community online sites to find out about any in your area. You can find various Halloween-themed toys and costumes at pet stores and online. When going out trick or treating with your dogs, be sure to secure them with a collar or harness and leash.

Remember to keep your dog away from the candy, especially if it contains chocolate or is sugar-free. Gum can also be problematic because of the artificial sweeteners and because swallowing gum can lead to blockages in the gastrointestinal tract. Try having special treats just for dogs so they can share in the Halloween fun.

We hope these ideas will help the whole family enjoy Halloween, including the family dogs.
